Ohio University Theater Division invites applicants for a full time Staff Assistant Technical Director and Instructor beginning fall 2019. The Production Design and Technology (PD&T) program is committed to a collaborative design and production process modelling professional training in theatrical design and technology, preparing students for careers in New York, Chicago, regional and/or international theatre, musical theatre, film, opera, and commercial production studio markets. Staff Assistant Technical Director specializing in practicing and instructing students in professional industry production standards. We seek an experienced, professional, and organized individual to lead the scene shop activities toward the successful on-time delivery of scenery crafted to regional theatre standards as well as an individual capable of teaching classes in the Technical Direction curriculum. In collaboration with the faculty Technical Director, this individual will direct the everyday operations of the scene shop for the Theater Division and Tantrum Theater, and oversee assigned activities within the electrics shop, assuring a safe work environment. This is an eleven-month renewable staff appointment.
Primary Accountabilities: Instruct/Teach undergrad and graduate students on a daily basis. Providing strong mentorship to students to enhance both the MFA and BFA programs is critical in our educational environment. The ideal candidate should have teaching knowledge and production experience in project management, structural design, welding and metal fabrication, scenic construction methodologies, digital drafting (AutoCAD) and technical design, scenic automation, stage electrics, and other specialized theatrical techniques.
Duties include working with the faculty technical director and student production technical directors to achieve the scenic design goals of the School of Theater and Tantrum Theater. Mentoring students in the scenic construction components of our production season; establish and enforce shop standards; train and oversee student carpenter teams; daily supervision and maintenance of the scene shop, theatre facilities, electrics shop as assigned, and acquisition and management of scenic and electrics areas production supplies. The teaching of specialized technology and management skills courses as well as contributing to instructional and administrative duties in collaboration with the faculty TD and graduate student assistants.
MFA required. Ability to Teach courses within the Technical Direction Curriculum. Documented expertise in shop equipment maintenance and scenery construction skills. Working knowledge of all processes in the Technical Direction, Stage Lighting, and design programs.
Experience in university teaching. Experience teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds. Connections to professional markets.
