John Burroughs School, an independent coeducational college preparatory school for grades 7-12, seeks applicants for a full time Designer/Technical Director/Production Manager to join a dynamic and collegial department of teachers who are also working artists, starting in July 2019.
The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:
an excellent working knowledge of lighting, sound, and projection technology
experience working with middle and high school students (experience with independent schools a plus)
experience as a professional scenic and lighting designer and/or technical director
a minimum of a BA/BFA in design/technical theater

The Designer/Technical Director/Production Manager would join the Theatre, Speech & Dance department, which mounts a production season of three plays, one musical, a dance show, a showcase of student work, and, in conjunction with the Music and Fine Arts departments, a holiday program.
For the Theatre, Speech & Dance Department, this position would:
Design sets, lights, and sound for all productions
Build sets and props for all productions
Do scenic painting and set decoration for all productions
Hang and focus for all productions
Strike all productions
Teach a two day per week elective class in design/production
Help the department identify students interested in technical theatre, and train and mentor student technicians and stage managers
Coordinate, train, and oversee student build, run, and strike crews
Attend a weekly production meeting
Maintain lighting stock, light and sound boards, as well as shop and scenic/prop stock
Remain abreast of the latest technology in light, sound, projection, and design
Additionally, this position would provide light and sound support for the greater school community. Duties would include:
Oversee the technical requirements for daily morning assembly
Coordinate light and sound needs for school wide special event and for some outside performances and events
The Designer/Technical Coordinator would work with and be supported by our costume designer, who designs for the season and maintains the costume stock.
Responsibilities will include participation in the larger life of the school (e.g., attending daily morning assembly, supervising a lunch table, and advising). The ability to provide leadership in co-curricular areas (e.g., community service or student clubs) is a plus.
