The Pingry School-Basking Ridge Campus seeks a 10-month, part-time master (stage) carpenter to join a diverse academic community. The ideal candidate has excellent carpentry skills, sound technical expertise, working knowledge of stagecraft, and an ability to interpret and implement set design blueprints in collaboration with the set designer, theater director, and technical staff (lighting designer, sound designer and student technicians). With safety as a primary concern, the master carpenter must understand safety issues involved with set building, store lumber securely, and keep the shop clean, stocked, and organized. This candidate must be able to manage heavy lifting and position set pieces according to specifications.
The master carpenter is committed to guiding young people as they construct their understanding of stagecraft in a student-centered theater environment. A person with consistently high standards, the candidate of choice seeks growth and learning every day, both personally and professionally, and inspires others to do the same through optimism, selflessness, flexibility, and teamwork. With robust interpersonal skills, the selected candidate has an ease with diverse constituencies, a demonstrated commitment to an inclusive school community, and a real desire to contribute to the school community.
The Drama Department produces four shows per year: the Upper School fall play in November, the Upper School musical in February, the senior play in in March, and the Middle School musical in April. Additionally, the Department supports a largely student-run production as part of the Independent Senior Project (ISP) program. The work hours for the master carpenter are generally 2:30-5:30 daily plus two or three Saturday per show (for building, technical rehearsals, shows, and strike).
