The program in African American and Africana Studies and the Division of Musicology/Ethnomusicology in the School of Music invites applications for an Assistant Professor with a specialization in the music and/or the expressive culture of Africa and/or the African Diaspora, to begin August 2020.
The area of research specialization is open, but we are particularly interested in candidates whose work is engaged with 20th and 21st century music and methodologies, and who have experience teaching in some combination of the following: jazz, popular music and/or dance, the expressive cultures of Africa and/or the African Diaspora, and core classes in African American and/or Africana Studies. We seek interdisciplinary candidates whose research centers on the Black experience in fields such as African American Studies, African Studies, Africana Studies, Cultural Studies, Anthropology, Colonial and/or Postcolonial Studies, Performance Studies, Gender Studies, and Sound and Visual Studies. PhD is required, or to be completed by July 2020.
Responsibilities of the position include pursuing an active research program in the candidate’s area of specialization; teaching the equivalent of four courses per year in AAAS and the School of Music; contributing to the mission of the School of Music; and taking an active role in the expansion of the program in AAAS. Competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Teaching and service will be shared with AAAS and the School of Music. Both units are committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue among faculty with diverse geographical interests, theoretical concerns, and methodological approaches. While this is a shared position, the AAAS is not a tenure-granting program so the successful applicant's tenure home will be in the School of Music.
