Kirby School seeks a full-time Dramatic Arts teacher with experience teaching both middle school and high school for the 2020-21 school year. The candidate should also have experience coordinating and directing productions to be performed for the community.
Ideal candidates likely possess a teaching credential in the field of Dramatic Arts and/or three-plus years of relevant teaching experience in the area of Dramatic Studies in grades 6th-12th. Professional experience in the field is highly desirable, as is a sincere desire to nurture and expand our students’ creative potential. Candidates should have experience coordinating all elements of performances, with an emphasis on partnering with a variety of constituencies from administration to faculty to parents and, of course, students. Working collaboratively on staging, set, lighting, and musical support will also be important.
We desire candidates who practice critical inquiry, welcome interdisciplinary collaboration, and offer innovative perspectives. In addition to experience with plays and musicals, expertise and/or experience in Devised Theater, Viewpoints, playwriting, and/or other innovative approaches would also be highly valued.
Along with teaching both middle and high school students, the candidate will be responsible for at minimum two yearly productions. In these capacities, the ideal candidate will be expected to provide students with technical training (with room for artistic exploration), live production experience, as well as the social and historical context for making and engaging theater in a changing world.
We are especially interested in candidates with a strong interest in diversity, inclusion, and social inquiry as elements in the curricular development of their classes. The ability to apply a developmentally-informed approach and awareness in teaching both middle and high school level is critical, as is an understanding of helping performers balance their academic lives in such a way that ensures student well-being and health.
This is a full-time position and includes health benefits and a salary base that is competitive with CAIS norms.
