Green Acres School is seeking a full-time teacher of art for students from 3-years-old through 8th grade. The successful candidate will love kids and love art. That person will know how to inspire and manage young children through pre-teens as they explore the different elements of artistic composition and as they work with different media. As a progressive school, Green Acres highly values “learning by doing” and project-based work, which connects naturally to the kinds of activities that art class incorporates. In addition to learning artistic techniques and dispositions, our art students explore big questions in their projects, and they get to know (and sometimes imitate) famous artists and artistic movements. The successful candidate will have the ability to nurture our youngest students in their use of art to explore their worlds, and they will be able to engage young adolescents and pre-adolescents socially and emotionally as those children come to increasingly sophisticated understandings of their layered communities and their places in them. The art studio includes a kiln, and clay creations are developed and fired at different times for all of our students. The Art teacher collaborates with homeroom teachers in the Lower School to integrate art with the themes that children are studying in their homeroom classes. And in the Spring, the art teacher leads a class of students in designing the stage sets and props for the 7th and 8th grade musical theater production.
Green Acres seeks an experienced art teacher who has a background in developing and sustaining a hands-on, art curriculum and engaging children of all ages in the imaginative world of visual arts. The successful candidate will possess the following capacities: a sincere love of working with tweens and children, a passion for art and the teaching of it, curiosity and a growth mindset, the ability to provide differentiated instruction, and experience with the developmental needs of a wide range of young learners. A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
Founded in 1934, Green Acres School is one of the country’s leading progressive schools. Serving approximately 200 students in grades PK-8, the school occupies a 15-acre campus in North Bethesda, Maryland. Our school focuses on the development of the whole child through an academically challenging program that emphasizes interdisciplinary and experiential learning.
Green Acres School offers a collegial work environment, competitive salaries, and a strong benefits package. Multiple buildings serve Lower School (PK-4) and Middle School (5-8) students; we value the outdoors for ourselves and for our students. Strong understanding of child development is essential for Green Acres teachers. An advanced degree in addition to significant experience with best practices in progressive education is strongly preferred.
