Position Description: Plymouth Meeting Friends School seeks a general Music Teacher to engage our Pre-K through Sixth Grade students in their creative exploration of musicianship. Music classes at PMFS provide students opportunities to build skills and an appreciation of the arts, allowing them to gain confidence from their participation in a community process. General music classes at PMFS include exposure to keyboards, recorder, Orff instruments and a broad array of world instruments. PMFS students perform two all-school concerts under the direction of the Music Teacher.
The Music Teacher is a member of the Specials team. Music classes provide our students with an immersion in performing arts and a foundation to develop courage, personal growth and confidence. Collaborative performances celebrate the values of our PMFS community and hopes for the world. The Music Teacher produces and directs the Sixth Grade Musical/Production, a culminating class experience central to PMFS’ oldest students. In addition, the Music Teacher collaborates with the administration to coordinate the Sixth Grade graduation ceremony.
The ideal candidate is passionate about teaching elementary school aged children. Essential competencies include proficiency on piano and/or guitar; experience and understanding of general music instruction; comfort with ethnomusicology (world music/diversity of style, instrumentation and genre); understanding of and experience with directing young performers; and familiarity with current research, trends, and best practices in elementary education.
Given the nature of the global pandemic, music instruction and school performances may be delivered in-person and/or virtually during 2021-2022 school year. PMFS upholds the priority of maintaining the health and safety of the community while celebrating school traditions and special events.
Qualifications: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in music education, performance, or related field is required. Applicants are expected to have at least three years of classroom experience. Facility with usage and integration of technology are required. A strong alignment with Quaker testimonies and progressive education—in philosophy and teaching practice-- is expected. Experience or familiarity with the Responsive Classroom approach and Orff Schulwerk are a plus. We actively seek candidates who reflect the rich diversity of our school community.
Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest, resume, a statement of educational philosophy and three professional references with contact information to firstname.lastname@example.org
