The College of Fine Arts at Ohio University is seeking an excited and committed instructor for a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Instruction position for Fall 2023. The position will be a joint appointment in the School of Theater (60%) and the School of Dance (40%). To meet curricular requirements for both musical theater and dance majors, the course load for this position will be distributed between them, teaching both required and elective dance courses for each degree program. We envision the successful candidate teaching two core SoD courses in one semester and one in the other, allowing for the teaching of two courses required for MTs in one semester and three in the other. The successful candidate should have substantial experience teaching and working collaboratively as part of their professional experience and artistic practice. We seek a teaching artist/educator who will work with the current faculty and embrace our mission of creating an inclusive, brave, and collaborative learning environment. Teaching duties include all levels of hip hop and tap, with commitment and ability to teach these genres from their historical roots and traditions, and Musical Theater Dance classes. Additional courses will be in the area(s) of the candidate's expertise, including Jazz, Dance Composition, Ballet, Contemporary, and/or Modern. Additional duties include choreographing for the Musical Theater program, advising, recruiting new students, and supervising projects and/or rehearsals. This position will also serve as a liaison between the schools, ensuring that all course offerings are readily available to both dance and MT majors. Summer teaching opportunities might also be available including College of Fine Arts Summer Programs, which might include the Summer Dance Instiruate and/or the Musical Theater summer program. The College of Fine Arts is one of thirteen college-level academic units at Ohio University and is itself composed of six schools: the School of Art + Design, the School of Music, the School of Film, the School of Interdisciplinary Arts, the School of Dance, and the School of Theater. With approximately 130 faculty and staff, the College of Fine Arts serves roughly 1000 students. The College values collaboration across academic units, high-quality creative experiences, community involvement, and close mentoring of students. With exciting festivals, an arthouse cinema, museums, and a professional theater company, the College of Fine Arts deepens the quality of life at Ohio University, in the Athens community, and for all of southeast Ohio. The School of Theater is a professional training program with BFA degrees in Performance (both Acting and Musical Theater), Playwriting, Stage Management, and Production Design & Technology, as well as MFA degrees in Acting, Directing, Production Design, and Production Technology. There are approximately 230 students (of which 45-50 are graduate students) and 25 faculty and staff. The School of Dance is a professional training program with a BFA in Performance and Choreography, BA in dance, and dance minor options, as well as an MA degree in Community Dance. There are approximately 75 students in the School of Dance with 5 full-time dance faculty and 1 full-time technical director. In addition to teaching, responsibilities include: · Serving as a mentor and advisor to students · Collaboration with faculty and guest artists · Choreographing in the Theater and Dance seasons · Working with the faculties of both Schools to develop the curricula · Recruiting on the local, regional, and national level · Serving on School, College and University committees · Planning with on-campus student resource offices and allied communities to maximize a safe and respectful learning environment · Determining, selecting, and organizing facilities, equipment, and materials necessary for learning · Preparation of course syllabi, in-class activities, exams, class handouts, online materials, audiovisual materials, etc., as appropriate, desired, and necessary
Minimum Qualifications:
· An undergraduate degree in dance, musical theater, or related field
· Professional experience working in the field
· Experience teaching in higher education
· Demonstrated ability to choreograph for musical theater and/or dance
Preferred Qualifications:
· Graduate degree in performance or choreography by start date
· Knowledge of contemporary pedagogical practices and ability to teach across disciplines and collaborate in interdisciplinary contexts
· Effective collaborative, organizational, and interpersonal skills with students, faculty, and staff
· Experience recruiting and building relationships with schools and communities
