The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of Upper School Vocal Music Teacher and Theatrical Music Director. This position has the potential to be full- or part-time. A full-time teacher will be responsible for all or nearly all of these roles listed below. A part-time teacher will be responsible for a subset of these roles:
Teach and direct Middle School Chorus, preparing students for a Winter and Spring Concert, as well as other performances throughout the year;
Serve as Music Director for high school musical (Sept through Dec) and middle school musical (January through March), and serve as accompanist and conductor for these performances;
Teach Middle School Theater classes, if appropriate;
Accompany students for school assemblies, productions, and programs on the piano as needed;
Prepare students for vocal or small group solos for assemblies and programs;
Teach in the middle school advisory program, Intro to Piano courses, study hall, or fill other needs;
Participating in team meetings to discuss student progress;
Work collaboratively within the Arts Department and with the Middle and High School teams;
Other duties as assigned.
Master’s preferred, Bachelor’s required in one of the following fields: Music Education, Vocal Performance, Vocal/Choral Pedagogy, or a related field.
Two or more years of highly successful experience instructing middle and high school students, preferably in a school environment, with a successful record of creating strong relationships with students and parents.
Candidates should have at least three years of successful teaching experience in collaborative working environments.
Experience in differentiated instruction, project based learning, Collaborative Problem Solving, student-centered instruction and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred.
Training and experience in social emotional learning (SEL) and experiential education preferred.
Ability to teach a broad range of musical genres, such as pop, rock, classical, folk, musical theater, etc.
Knowledge of Jewish music, or willingness to learn Jewish music.
Experience as a piano accompanist.
Demonstrated ability in arranging music for vocal ensembles and small instrumental ensembles.
Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) required.
Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the teacher is required to maintain a professional environment.
While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in an alternative setting. Teachers are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day (contracted hours), regardless of the setting.
