DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Music Department at UC Santa Cruz offers two undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and a Bachelor of Music (B.M.). The B.A. degree offers a uniquely diverse curriculum, with the option of completing a concentration in either Contemporary Practices, Global Musics, or Western Art Music. The department also offers a masters program and two doctoral programs. There are 12 senate faculty, 45+ lecturers, and 80-100 curricular performances/events annually
Under the supervision of the Technical Director, the Piano Technician utilizes advanced professional skills and technical knowledge to provide tuning, inspection, repair, and maintenance services for the UC Santa Cruz Music Department's pianos, harpsichords, fortepianos, clavichords, virginals, and other early keyboard instruments, working directly with guest performers as needed.

Budgeted Salary: $32.66 - $35.05 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. JOB DUTIES
80% - Piano Tuning
Under the supervision of the Technical Director, the keyboard technician utilizes advanced professional skills and technical knowledge to provide tuning, inspection, repair, and maintenance services for the UC Santa Cruz Music Department's pianos.
10% - Concert Tuning
Tune, voice, and regulate concert grand pianos to the exact tonal qualities and touch desired by faculty and guest performers. Work directly with guest performers as needed.
10% - Early Keyboard Tuning
Provide tuning, inspection, repair, and maintenance for the department's harpsichords, fortepianos, clavichords, virginals, and other early keyboard instruments in various tuning systems and temperaments on a regular, scheduled basis in consultation with the Music Technical Director.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Significant experience tuning a variety of pianos, including uprights, practice and concert grand pianos.
Substantial professional experience in all phases of piano technology, including significant experience in the renovation and rebuilding of pianos.
Familiarity with a variety of tuning systems and experience with prepared piano.
Registered Piano Technician or currently enrolled in piano technician program
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively interact with diverse groups of people including faculty, staff, students, and visiting artists.
Ability to work with minimal supervision, with a tolerance for interruptions.
Demonstrated commitment to embracing diversity in all its forms and striving for an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened, and productive environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience tuning, regulating and repairing harpsichords, fortepianos, clavichords and other early keyboard instruments.
Related experience in an educational setting.
Familiarity with University policies and procedures.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Ability to provide own tools.
Ability to push or roll 1400 lbs. with or without accommodation.
Will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
Ability to work a variable schedule.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
