Walnut Hill School for the Arts seeks a part-time faculty member to join the World Languages department for the second semester of 2023-2024 starting in January 2024. Responsibilities include teaching one section of Spanish I and one section of French II. The ideal candidate can teach both French and Spanish, however, candidates who can teach one of the two languages are welcome to apply. Classes are 70 minutes long and meet 5 days per week.

Compensation is $8,500 per section for the semester.  

Walnut Hill language programs aim to teach language and encourage cross-cultural exploration in an immersive environment; students are required to use only the target language to engage in class, even at the introductory level. The department places special emphasis on speaking, and students hone their skills through active participation in different activities such as story-telling, songs, routine conversations, presentations, and debates. Courses are comprehensive and sequential, and celebrate language, culture, and personal growth.

Responsibilities:

Teaching & Department Duties

• Teach French II and/or Spanish I in the World Languages department; utilize best practices in teaching within this academic discipline;

• Prepare lessons and develop curriculum that reflects the diverse educational and cultural backgrounds of the student body; teach, lead, and guide students and promote an open and safe classroom space;

• Foster a skills-centered, student-centered learning environment;

• Utilize technology and other educational tools to support student learning; and

• Be prepared to teach both in person in the classroom, and online if needed.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

• Participate in restorative practices; actively learn about and practice anti-racist work;

• Work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments to foster a positive working and educational environment that supports the school’s mission, vision, and core values;

• Attend student arts productions, shows, exhibitions, and performances;

• Attend and participate in appropriate department meetings, assembly, Professional Development days, orientation programs, mandatory seminars, team-building exercises, and safety training; and

• Display willingness and ability to grow, learn, explore new approaches, and practice self-reflection.

Skills and Qualifications

• Native or near-native fluency in the applicable language and fluency in English required;

• 2+ years teaching or equivalent experience required; experience working with high school students preferred; 

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience required, Master’s degree recommended;

• Wide repertoire of teaching skills including developing differentiated curriculum that suits a variety of learning styles;

• Comfort with technology and willingness to adopt new technologies as needed; strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google applications required;

• Innovative teaching practices and a focus on student-centered learning;

• Strong collaboration and team-oriented working and leadership skills;

• Possess cultural competence in working with diverse populations; demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive community;

• Ability to speak authentically about the imperative for diversity, equity, and inclusion and comfort with cross-cultural dialogue; 

• Share an educational and artistic vision that aligns with the core principles of Walnut Hill; 

• Ability to balance a pursuit of academic, artistic, and institutional excellence with compassion and nurture for each individual; and

• Positive attitude and a passion for teaching and learning.

Physical Demands

Physical demands include dexterity for office machine and supply operation including but not limited to writing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy/fax machine, and printers. Stooping, bending, traveling to/from locations on campus, ascending/descending stairs, reaching and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.
